Line-by-line notes

  1. INTRO
  2. No matter what you do as a job
  3. I think you should be doing this thing in your spare time
  4. Whether you’re an accountant, a developer, a designer or a lawyer, doing this thing makes you automatically better at your job
  5. That thing is stuff
  6. And the thing you should be doing with it is making it
  7. Because making stuff makes you better
  8. This is AADA, and I’m Craig Burgess
  9. By the way, I’m feeling in a bit of a Friday mood today
  10. So today’s music is quite weekendy…
  11. PLAY MID SONG
  12. After recording another episode of AADA a few days ago, I started to think about what I could tell my younger 18 year old self
  13. That if I could go back in time, what is the one most important thing that’s turned me into the human I am today?
  14. Im too humble to call myself successful, but I’m happy, and I lead a life I enjoy with no limitations.
  15. I got to thinking about what makes a good designer, and what one thing you could teach a young designer that could potentially turn that young designer into a great one
  16. When I sit down and really think about the things I’ve learnt in my short career of 11 years so far
  17. There’s lots of things I could mention
  18. Creative ability
  19. Curiosity
  20. A passion for learning
  21. Networking
  22. Being friendly
  23. Helping others
  24. Having a vision
  25. And never giving up
  26. Yes, they’re all important
  27. And really, it’s impossible or not really that important to pick one
  28. But if I think about one thing specifically
  29. It’s the simple act of making things
  30. And making things often
  31. Let me explain
  32. Making things can be anything, and I think that’s why it’s such a powerful concept to any industry
  33. In my world, making things meant designing stuff
  34. Even before I got my first design job, I’ve always just designed stuff
  35. Ever since I started my design education
  36. I became obsessed
  37. And started just making stuff all the time
  38. Because I was constantly making stuff
  39. I was constantly getting better
  40. I was getting 10000 hours of practice in just by designing stuff all the time
  41. And at the time when I first started out
  42. Almost 99 percent of it was for myself
  43. Just making stuff completely for the fun of it
  44. Some people would call this pointless
  45. But for me
  46. It was and still is some of the best work I do
  47. Because you get to explore things
  48. And learn new things
  49. And you’re doing it for yourself and for nobody else
  50. I live for making work like this
  51. And making things
  52. At the minute I’m spending 2 hours a day making a podcast
  53. And some people might think that’s quite a lot of time
  54. And it is
  55. But I do it because I just love the act of making things
  56. I’d prefer to spend 2 hours learning and making
  57. Than 2 hours vegetating
  58. Watching crap television
  59. The simple and sometimes complex act of making
  60. Has a deeper meaning for me
  61. It’s like my daily meditation
  62. Or my daily exercise for my brain
  63. Im a maker at heart
  64. And if I’m not making things, I’m getting twitchy and not feeling myself
  65. Making stuff makes me a better human in so many ways
  66. So if there’s one thing young designers should do
  67. Is make more stuff
  68. And keep making more stuff
  69. Because making more stuff than everybody else
  70. Automatically makes you better
