Line-by-line notes

  1. INTRO
  2. I like to give out lots of tips to designers
  3. And generally
  4. They just apply to being a good human as well
  5. Today’s episode definitely falls into this category
  6. Ever since we started Genius Division
  7. The design agency I run with a few other conspirators
  8. We’ve tried to live by one mantra
  9. Work hard and be nice to people
  10. Yesterday was work hard
  11. Today is be nice to people
  12. This is AADA, and I’m Craig Burgess
  13. PLAY MID SONG
  14. Manners cost nothing
  15. Good manners are your beauty
  16. Your mood shouldn’t dictate your manners
  17. I tried to find quote about being nice too
  18. But they were all negative
  19. And paranoid
  20. Nice guys always finish last
  21. Even the nicest people have their limits
  22. Quotes like that
  23. There’s an inherent distrust of nice people
  24. Especially in Britain, where nobody can take a compliment
  25. People constantly that that if you’re being nice, you want something
  26. Or there’s a reason for being nice
  27. Beyond just being nice
  28. I absolutely don’t believe nice guys finish last at all
  29. And you shouldn’t either
  30. The whole idea of finishing last
  31. Suggests there’s an idea of success that everybody buys into
  32. Which is just not true
  33. Being nice is the cornerstone of everything I do
  34. I hate it when somebody thinks otherwise of me
  35. I hate it when I’ve hurt somebody or somebody is annoyed at me
  36. In an ideal world I’d love everybody to like me
  37. And I’m not saying that I’m an egotistical way
  38. I mean everybody should just like everybody
  39. There’s no need for backhanded compliments
  40. Or silly games behind people’s backs
  41. Let’s just all be nice
  42. And let’s get it out of the way now
  43. Being nice doesn’t mean you’re weak
  44. Or you’re a pushover
  45. Or you let others get their own way all the time
  46. Despite what Hollywood and TV shoves down all our throats
  47. You can politely decline
  48. And you don’t need an argument to solve a difference of opinion
  49. I think in the design world, being nice is especially important
  50. The design world is still pretty small
  51. And most people know each other
  52. It’s quite incestuous that way
  53. So you never know when you might stumble across somebody again in a different job
  54. I don’t believe in burning bridges no matter how hard the other side might try to set it on fire
  55. Being nice isn’t trendy anymore I guess
  56. The corporate mentality is to drop things on everybody below you and throw stones at people above you
  57. Everybody is a target and somebody to be stepped on
  58. But in a meritocracy
  59. Where everybody is out to get on the next rung of the ladder
  60. It forgets about the people
  61. Design is all about people
  62. It’s about the people you share a studio with
  63. It’s about your clients you help create amazing work for
  64. And it’s about your peers and other people who you ask for advice from
  65. You have to be nice to all of those people, all the time
  66. In fact, just be nice to people
  67. It just feels
  68. Well
  69. Nice
  70. OUTRO
