Line-by-line notes

  1. INTRO
  2. When you’re making things
  3. Designing things
  4. Drawing things
  5. Or just creating things
  6. Is a really special thing
  7. It’s not like anything else on this planet
  8. When you get into the zone…
  9. It’s like stepping into another world
  10. This is AADA, and I’m Craig Burgess
  11. PLAY MID SONG
  12. Jazz music is the ultimate place of stepping into another world for me
  13. Jazz musicians are some of the most creative people on the planet
  14. And once they’ve found their flow
  15. Their improvisations are otherworldly
  16. When their improvising, they’re in a flow and in another world
  17. The idea of flow is not an idea that’s unique to creativity
  18. It’s talked about in sports and lots of other places
  19. The idea is sometimes referred to as being in the zone
  20. It’s a special place where nothing else matters around you
  21. You’re completely and utterly immersed in your activity
  22. I get like this when I’m designing things
  23. And also when I’m coding
  24. Once I’m 100% focused on the activity
  25. Everything else around me fades away
  26. Being in a creative flow is a lot like meditating
  27. You’re completely and utterly focused on nothing else
  28. In my day to day life
  29. Of phone calls, emails and office conversation
  30. I don’t get much of a chance to get into this zone
  31. It’s hard in a busy lifestyle with lots to do
  32. To get focused
  33. And to find room inside your busy brain
  34. But to produce our best work
  35. And to be at our best creatively
  36. We need to find ways to achieve it
  37. Everybody’s different
  38. And part of the challenge of harnessing your other world
  39. Is to find when it’s easiest to access for you
  40. For some people it’s a morning
  41. And there’s been lots of studies to say that mornings are the most productive for a lot of people
  42. For me, I love my sleep
  43. So mornings aren’t good for me
  44. But I really kick into overdrive on an evening
  45. Unfortunately the later the better for me
  46. I love the feeling of night time peace
  47. And that really feels like another world to me
  48. I record my podcasts pretty late at night
  49. The night time has a different mood for me
  50. Everything is at peace
  51. And everything is quiet
  52. There’s no fast moving people needing to get somewhere
  53. And there’s no cars flying around desperate to get to their final destination
  54. Everybody is just…relaxed
  55. And enjoying themselves
  56. And whilst this time is going on
  57. I feel at my most creative and productive
  58. To succeed as a designer or any creative
  59. You’ve got to learn about your other world
  60. And how to get into it
  61. Savour it
  62. And create stuff in it
  63. Not only will you become a better creative
  64. You’ll enjoy yourself too
  65. A win win creative situation
  66. OUTRO
