Line-by-line notes

  2. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day grind
  3. Doing the same thing
  4. Day
  5. After
  6. Day
  7. After
  8. Day
  9. We’re human.
  10. We love routines, following the status quo, and pleasing people
  11. We get caught up in doing what we think we should be doing
  12. Because that’s what people expect of us
  13. All too often
  14. We forget about passion
  15. And doing what we’re passionate about
  16. This is Ask a Designer Anything, and I’m Craig Burgess
  19. I’m lucky
  20. I have a passion, and that’s design
  21. Following design, making design, reading about design
  22. I’m even luckier, it’s my job as well.
  23. For a long time though, that was the only thing I had
  24. I spent 100 percent of my time in the design world
  25. Ever since I started learning formally about design from around 18, I was hooked
  26. It consumed my life, every last second of it
  27. And to be honest…
  28. I burned out
  29. I absorbed too much design, spent too much time just doing that and nothing else
  30. I got a bit sick of design, and that was rubbish.
  31. I had to work out how to get my passion back
  32. Don’t get me wrong, I still LOVED design
  33. It was my passion, some might say my first love
  34. But I’d got burnt out by burning the candle too much
  35. I’d forgotten the importance of hobbies, and how they enrich your life
  36. How they warm your heart
  37. Hobbies, they’re just good for your soul
  38. And they give you passion about something that’s not just your job
  39. They let you escape from the day to day grind
  40. That we so easily get caught up in
  41. Too easily
  42. I started to think about hobbies, and I came back to my a thing a day for 365 days thing
  43. Over the years, I’ve done some random things
  44. A photo a day, a poster a day, a album sleeve a day, a logo a day
  45. The majority of them though were just more design, and right now I didn’t need that
  46. I needed something different
  47. Completely different
  48. So I tried a new challenge
  49. I decided, on 2 days notice, to try something I’d never done before
  50. And that was make a podcast
  51. I didn’t know anything about it
  52. Where to start, what to do, where to look
  53. I knew nothing. Absolutely nothing.
  54. I quickly realised the passion that fuelled me was learning new things
  55. Researching, and digging out that new knowledge
  56. I felt like Christopher Columbus discovering America every day when I found something new out about podcasting
  57. And that brings us full circle to here.
  58. Right now.
  59. This podcast.
  60. This podcast combines the 2 things I love the most: design, and podcasting.
  61. It’s like passion squared, and I absolutely love it
  62. I’m excited all day every day to come upstairs on a night and prepare another episode
  63. I love digging out new music, planning my podcast, and writing the script
  64. I’m in a good place, because I’ve got a passion
  65. If you haven’t got a passion, I hope this will inspire you to go find one
  66. Like I said, they’re so valuable. So important.
  67. They’re just plain good for you, and good for your soul.
