  3. I love that video, where Steve Harvey dresses up the idea of taking a risk to do something meaningful with your life.
  4. I had that video introduced to me yesterday, and I knew I had to talk a bit more about it.
  5. I want to talk about an issue sideways to that
  6. I’m going to talk more about
  7. Work
  8. Just hearing that word…work…
  9. will make you think a million things
  10. And I bet they’re all negative
  11. It’s a word laced with negative connotations
  12. And it’s a word I want to challenge you to reassess
  13. Today’s not about design
  14. It’s about work.
  15. This is Ask a Designer Anything, and I’m Craig Burgess
  17. Live to work or work to live?
  18. I hear these mantras a lot, and I have lots of interesting conversations about it
  19. It serves as an interesting conversation starter
  20. But I think fundamentally, it’s flawed
  21. Living to work your life away is a bad thing
  22. And working to live your life when you’re not at work is also a bad thing
  23. The entire phrase suggests that work
  24. The very act of work
  25. Is something to be demonised
  26. And traditionally, it is a bad thing
  27. The word “work” conjures up images of an office
  28. Of lots of cubicles, and people sat diligently staring at computer screens
  29. But what if work wasn’t a bad thing?
  30. Mostly, it’s not
  31. Working at something is a good thing
  32. A workout, exercising, improves your health
  33. It’s when people connect the idea of doing a task whilst getting paid of it
  34. Suddenly it’s work
  35. And that’s always a bad thing
  36. But if I said to you, or anybody else
  37. What if I said you could stop working tomorrow
  38. And start getting paid to do something you enjoy
  39. Would you do it?
  40. Of course you would
  41. 100% of people would say yes
  42. If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life
  43. Marc Anthony’s quote couldn’t be any more on the money
  44. We’re always told that work has to be boring
  45. That it has to be a means to an end
  46. That we can’t let work take over our lives
  47. That we shouldn’t work too hard
  48. That work is the devil
  49. That working for the man is wrong
  50. All these phrases instil in us that work is wrong
  51. But if you just go do something you love
  52. And get paid for it
  53. You’ll never work again
  54. It just takes some creativity
  55. Some guts
  56. And a bit of hustle to go achieve it
  57. It means you’ve got to jump, too, just like Steve Harvey says
  58. That’s Steve Harvey talking about the idea of “jumping”
  59. The way I look at it
  60. If I’m going to spend a large proportion of my life working
  61. Doing something to make money
  62. I’m going to make sure it’s something I love doing
  63. Otherwise, what’s the point?
  64. What’s the point of living at all, if 1 third of it is spent doing something you hate?
  65. Something to think about
  66. The next time you go on a rant about your job
  67. Think about reassessing what work is
  68. And go do something you love, and you’re good at
  69. And get paid for it
